A Complete and Effective Flood Monitoring Solution for Local Government

The Barko RVT Flood Camera System is a low cost, self-installed and highly versatile PTZ (Pan, Tilt, Zoom) flood monitoring solution. Council staff can quickly and easily install the camera mounted towers in selected locations, well above flood reach. The downloadable app enables selected staff to completely control each camera from a mobile device. They can zoom in allowing critical views of the trouble spots that can be streamed back to officers’ mobile devices as well as Council websites for real-time viewing by the traveling public.

Forewarned and Forearmed: SRM (Smart Risk Management)

Extreme weather events are becoming more frequent and severe. Managing and mitigating the risks to residents, property and infrastructure during a flood event can be overwhelming for any agency. Residents can jam Call Centre phone lines wanting information – is their road closed? Can they get to work? Is a particular bridge or culvert passable? Motorists may attempt dangerous crossings when they don’t understand the water conditions. Road crews need up-to-the-minute information on where urgent and critical action is necessary.

Powerful, Renewable Wireless Connectivity

The Barko Flood Monitoring Systems provide guaranteed and uninterrupted video access where it’s needed, saving hundreds, if not thousands, of staff hours in call centre time and call outs. Residents, motorists and staff can see flooding and road conditions online, in real-time with absolute clarity.

Barko has designed its flood monitoring system to be completely wireless and provides advanced connectivity options for cameras installed in even the most remote locations. The low current draw cameras, engineered with superior quality materials, are powered by a 200Watt Solar Panel and long-lasting 50amp/hr AGM battery that will work for days in overcast conditions and charge up in around 30 minutes when the sun reappears.

Rugged Construction

Barko Remote Viewing Towers are fully engineered and come in a standard 5-meter height. If the location requires a higher tower, Barko can supply extensions. Guy wires, a standard inclusion with every tower, can be added for stability. Remote Viewing Towers are available in both fixed and mobile versions. The Mobile RVT can be quickly and easily picked up with a forklift or truck-mounted crane and moved to another location as required, or stored safely if not in use.

Flood Monitoring in Action: The Clarence Valley Council Experience

The Clarence Valley Council in Northern NSW recently partnered with Barko Security to install nine Barko Remote Viewing Towers at ‘first underwater’ points in the floodplain across the Valley. This project has been an overwhelming success with both Council and residents.

Many communities in this area become isolated during flood events and have road, bridge and culvert access cut .by rising floodwaters. During recent wet weather events, council management and staff have reported enormous benefits from the Barko Flood management System, with staff hours cut dramatically, accidents reduced and fewer call-outs.

Live, Uninterrupted Video Streaming Guaranteed

Managing live-streaming can be tricky at the best of times and potentially costly in terms of staff time and IT resources. Barko solves this problem by guaranteeing uninterrupted viewing to any website and fast and efficient solutions to any technical issues that may arise.

Barko supply Council a link directly to their servers, which then connect to the cameras, so no complicated connectivity using Council IT resources. Residents, staff and work crews have immediate and real time access to road, bridge and waterway conditions. Website livestream also contain location and time stamp information for quick and easy identification.

The Barko App: Giving Organization Staff Total Control

Once the Flood Monitoring camera system is installed in required locations, Council officers can take complete control of the Pan Tilt Zoom (PTZ) capabilities of the cameras via the Barko app on their mobile phones. If conditions change, staff can quickly and easily alter the camera’s view. Barko takes the Live Stream view directly to its servers and manages the distribution to Council websites.

Better Flood Monitoring with Tangible Results

The introduction of the Barko RVT Flood Monitoring System across the Clarence Valley has been a game-changer for Council.

  • Significant reduction in call centre demand during extreme weather events
  • Enhanced customer engagement through live website streaming of local conditions
  • The Livestream RVT’s were an upgrade in technology compared to still image cameras currently in use. The Barko RVT-PTZ is more cost effective than still image cameras that require separate mounting and power.

  • Introduction of up-to-the-minute, high-end technologies without the cost of IT infrastructure and staff
  • Significantly faster response times and improved communications for emergency response crews, including voice and Wi-Fi capabilities built into the cameras.
  • Improved perceptions of Council’s commitment to upgrading technologies and better customer service
  • Improved and enhanced risk management and mitigation of WH&S issues.

Multiple Applications and Unlimited Support

The Barko Flood Monitoring Camera System has proven to be highly effective in the Clarence Valley during extreme weather events. The usefulness of this system is not confined to flooding events and the Remote Viewing Towers have a broad range of other applications, from security at construction sites, sale yards, car parks and asset facilities to land and weather watch, water storage & fire monitoring and even solar power to assist in powering remote assets. i.e. many councils are now responsible for Local Water Supply Monitoring – save staff and mandatory reporting time by remotely monitoring dams, spillways and other catchment areas of LGA responsibility. A well-positioned Barko RVT PTZ Camera can scan a dam wall in a fraction of the time taken to do a manual inspection.
